How To Select Tiles Episode 7- Joint Free Tiles, Spacer And Grouts

Episode 7: This session explains about Joint Free Tiles, Spacer and Grouts The session trys to explain what does Join Free Tiles means and can we actually lay tiles edge to edge with paper thin joints or what is generally called Joint Free Tiles. When tiles are made, there will be certain Bevel or taper at the edge of tiles. If this edge is cut in a subsequent process, it is called Joint Free tiles. We advise that Laying of tiles "Joint Free" is not encouraged for Floorings and has to be laid with Spacer only. We may use "Joint Free" Laying for walls. The reason a 2-3mm gap is to be provided between tiles to give space for expansion of tiles because of Temperature variation. Technically it is called expansion joint same as the one give in bridges. Tiles Burst or Popping out happens when not laid with spacer inbetween. The space is filled with Grout material. Previously, the gap inbetween the tiles was filled with white cement. White cements absorbs stains and in some time, looks black in colour. Hence, people did not prefer laying with space and filling with White Cement. Nowadays, grouts materials are water proof and will not absorb stain.
