How to Select Tiles This video is Episode 2 of Series "How to Select Tiles". This episode delves deep into Ceramic Tiles. How it is made, varieties and advantages and disadvantages. Ceramic Tiles is made of up Clay by adding Quartz , Feldspar etc and baked in Klin to 800 C. This creates plastic molecular structure which makes it stronger. The basic advantage of Ceramic tile is, the water absorption is around 6% . So it protects from coffee spills etc. However, for wall tiles the water absorption can go upto 15%. The base can be either Red body or white body depending upon the clay. But both are ceramic tiles. There is another category that has been introduced in Ceramic tiles lately called the "Porcelain Tiles" . This has been done by reducing the water absorption to 2-3 %. This quality is slightly better than Normal ceramic tiles. However, ceramic tiles strength is dependent on the top layer over the tile. The top layer is made up of Glaze material on which the design is printed. When the top layer wears down, the bottom Red /White base tile will be visible. Hence for heavy duty uses, ceramic tiles are not suitable and the need for Vitrified tiles. The next session details about Vitrified tiles.
